Backroom Insurance Deals to Determine State’s Future

(Baton Rouge – LA) Senator James David Cain, Chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee has learned that there will be a “private meeting” between Acting Insurance Commissioner Donelon and 15 big insurance companies. Senator Cain was told that this was “a private meeting and that the House and Senate Insurance Committees are not invited.” Senator Cain was also informed, by the Governor’s office, that there will be an insurance summit at a later date.

Senator James David Cain responded, “The people of Louisiana deserve to have a seat at the table when their future is being determined.  This ‘private meeting’ is reminiscent of Louisiana’s political past, when backroom deals controlled the fate of our state.”

“It seems that the purpose of this ‘private meeting’ is to come to an agreement with big insurance companies about what Louisiana laws should look like, then call for an insurance summit to rubber stamp decisions made behind closed doors.”

“If we are going to rebuild our state, we have to start by improving the credibility of our state government, and this is the wrong signal to send to the rest of the country about politics in Louisiana.”
