Where Was Donelon When Consumers Needed Leadership?

(Baton Rouge – LA) Senator James David Cain responded to the press conference held by Acting Insurance Commissioner Donelon today by asking a simple question: “Where was Donelon when Louisiana consumers needed leadership?”

“Where was Donelon when the Legislature sought this extension? We passed the bill during the legislative session with no help from the Insurance Commissioner.  When asked by the press about legislation to extend the deadline, he opposed the idea saying that the legislation would result in more litigation.”

“Where was Donelon when we tried to pass a bill to pay the Citizens’ assessment rather than placing a new burden to Louisiana consumers?  When we tried to streamline Citizens, Donelon was absent but he sent over an aide to oppose reforms that would have benefited Louisiana consumers. We got these bills out of the Senate, but opposition from the Insurance Department killed the legislation in the House.”

“Where was Donelon when the Legislature could have closed any potential loophole in our consumer protection laws to keep companies from cancelling wind and hail coverage?  He knew in January that Allstate intended to drop this coverage from existing policies and kept it a secret from the Legislature and Louisiana consumers. Why did he keep it secret?”

“He was nowhere to be found during the legislative session when we worked on the deadline extension, the Citizens’ assessment, or when we could have improved consumer protection, but now that it is election time, he is again abusing his office to score political points.”
