Profit from Power – Pt. 2: Donelon Covered-up his Record of Abusing Power for Personal Gain

(Metairie, LA) - As a State Legislator, Donelon pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars from state contracts, and failed to report the income on ethics reports.
While serving as a State Representative, and even as Chair of the House Insurance Committee, Donelon pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars in state contracts from the Louisiana Insurance Guaranty Association (LIGA), a state agency, for legal work.
During that time, Donelon filed income disclosure forms with the Legislature. He claimed that neither he, nor his spouse, nor any business enterprise in which he had an interest had received income in excess of $250 from the state.
In 1998, the tax reports at LIGA indicate Donelon earned $6154.19, or over 24 times the limit. In 1999, the tax reports at LIGA indicate he earned over 14 times the limit ($3585.57). From 1992-2000, Donelon received $403,497.07 in legal fees from LIGA, but never declared this state income in his financial disclosure reports as a State Legislator.
James David Cain responded, “It’s one thing to abuse your legislative office to get state insurance contracts, but to lie about it on ethics reports is a clear sign that Jim Donelon believes he can cash in on the system of corruption and not be held accountable for his actions.”
“On September 30th the voters of Louisiana have a chance to tell Jim Donelon that it’s a new day in Louisiana and end his decade’s long career of profiting from power,” James David Cain declared.
